Its better to go for printer and scanner separately. The reason is at present day we use the printer maximum and the usage of scanner part is very low. If you are buying a multifunctional you are buying both printer and scanner. The printer will be unusable after taking 60000 to 100000 prints but the scanner would remain functional.

Multifunction printers used to be a bad idea, but not any more.

The last couple of years have seen improvements in the way multifunction printers are made. The main reason for this is because at-home photo printing has become very popular. In order to keep up with high quality graphics, the major printer companies (HP, Epson, and Canon) have greatly improved the quality and reliability of multifunction printers, whether it is scanning, copying, or printing. Even faxing has seen improvements with faster fax speeds and higher resolution.

I own a HP Photosmart C5180 Printer/Scanner/Copier (does not have fax). I copy photos and the new ones look just like the originals. I can scan photos into my computer so that I can store them digitally. When I print photos on my printer, they are water proof, fade proof, and smudge proof for over 100 years- and they look much better than what Wal Mart could ever accomplish.

Multifuncion printers save money, time, and space. Everything you need is on one easy-to-use machine. At one time it was a bad idea to purchase a multifuncion machine. Nowdays, it’s almost silly not to.

There’s not really a "best" multifunction printer. It really depends on what you want to use it for. Photos? Business? At Home? Office? The best all around multifuncion is probably the HP Photosmart C6180 (it’s like my printer, but it also has a fax). If you don’t do a lot of photos, look at the HP Officejet 6310
